Research Ethics & Integrity

It is best practice to conduct research taking into consideration key ethical research issues including confidentiality and anonymity. From a researcher perspective, preserving confidentiality and guaranteeing anonymity is crucial for personal privacy protection.

As a responsible researcher, it is important to be aware of the pre, mid, and post stages (before, during, and after the research data collection process) of which these issues may arise. The consent form and participant information sheet below provide a template for use in your research. The importance of these forms is that it is an obligation to conduct research in harmless manner. And it is acceptable to obtain permission from the research participants- those taking part in the study.

As part of your research plan, you must be prepared to provide the research participants with informed consent and right to withdraw. It is a requirement as part of the ethic process that research particpants are fully informed about your research; what your research entails, how they will take part, and how their information will be used, in which they may participate and give their consent before their participation.

However, some research participants including children and vulnerable adults (for example, those with dysfunctional abilities, impaired decision-making capacities as well as patients with life threaten conditions) cannot give informed consent due to a lack of understanding to comprehend the information you are supplying them. By taking these issues into account, you are demonstrating your knowledge and awareness of the protection of the human subjects in research.

Regarding the right to withdraw, research participants must have the right to withdraw at any time with/without providing reasons for their withdrawal. While this suggests that research participants must not be manipulated, hold under duress or forced to contribute to your research, their participation in your research is totally voluntary.

As part of the ethic process, it is advisable to obtain the approval of your school research ethics committee before commencing your field work. The practical implication is that the feedback provided will help to shape the approach of your research and how you intend to deal with sensitive information. Consequently, this will help you to reflect on your interview and/or survey questions. Knowing all these, will/does your research involve human subjects? If yes, how will you address any potential and arising ethical issues?
